The Story that Started It All

From journalist to agency founder to author, my story is one of following the words, and trusting they’ll lead me home.

Carly Ottaway is reading a book on a beach, sitting on a white towel, with water in the background.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with stories.

Not just the ones we tell the world, but the ones we whisper to ourselves. The ones that shape how we show up, what we believe we’re worthy of, and what we dare to dream.

My career began in journalism, chasing stories across newsrooms and magazine desks, writing for national publications like Zoomer, Canadian Business, and Maclean’s. I interviewed everyone from bestselling authors and tech CEOs to rock stars and activists. I loved every second of it, but something in me kept craving more creative freedom.

So I built a second life working at a marketing agency in Toronto, learning the ins and outs of digital storytelling, brand positioning, and strategy. I found myself stuck at a crossroads when my boss gave me an ultimatum:

“You can either become one of the best digital marketers in the city… or chase the Pulitzer Prize.”

I didn’t feel like I should have to choose (I’m an Aries, and a Manifesting Generator after all for my fellow astrology and human design nerds). Instead, I took a $300 client retainer and a deep belief in something bigger, and I started my own business.

Building a Business, Writing a Bigger Story

Less than a year later, I convinced my husband to quit his job and join me. Together, we built Web of Words—a boutique creative agency that helps purpose-driven brands find their voice, tell their story, and build something real.

What started as a freelance writing hustle has evolved into a full-blown agency and a thriving team. We've helped everyone from international icons and bestselling authors to wellness brands and small business owners show up with more clarity, connection, and confidence online.

At Web of Words, we don’t just build brands—we help people share their truth and lead movements. And it’s been one of the greatest honours of my life.

The Moment I Stopped Hiding Behind the Keyboard

Here’s the part I don’t always talk about…

A woman sits on a stool in front of a large window with sunlight, being filmed by a person seated on a chair, with a camera on a tripod nearby. Indoor plants are present in the background.

In helping others share their stories, I started to lose track of my own.

I spent years hiding behind the keyboard, giving my best words to other people’s visions, while hiding behind the safety of the screen. Until one season, when life handed me a series of lessons I couldn’t ignore—from losing our home in a fire to navigating grief, motherhood, and business growth all at once.

It all led me to write Coming Home.

A book that’s part memoir, part manifesto—a reclamation of voice, truth, and identity. A powerful invitation to stop performing and start becoming.

Now, I’m speaking on stages, writing from the heart, and showing up fully—so that others can feel safe to do the same.

Whether you're here to explore the book, collaborate, or just get inspired, I’m so glad you found your way here.

We all have a story. And I believe the most powerful thing we can do is learn to own it.

Want to collaborate, connect, or invite me to speak?

Let’s bring your story—and your audience—home to what matters most.
